A chaban typically has two levels: the top surface features holes for draining water and tea. It holds the teapot, cups, and other accessories. The lower tray or reservoir collects liquid and is often removable for easy cleaning.
The Chinese tea ceremony which we use in our everyday life at home is not just about brewing tea; it is a profound philosophy encompassing respect for nature, balance, the beauty of the moment. The chaban plays a central role in this practice, helping create an atmosphere of focus and order.
Chaban is a special tea tray used in traditional Chinese tea ceremonies (gongfu cha). Its main function is to serve as a working surface for tea preparation and to simplify the process of collecting excess water.
We created a metal prototype of it — an aluminium model which makes a contrast to the traditional designs. Using a chaban adds rituality to the tea-making process as it is not just a tray but an essential element symbolizing respect for tradition and attention to detail. The chaban sets the rhythm and structure of the ceremony.
